“Is there anything better than an all-you-can-eat buffet? Oh yes. An all-you-can-eat cake buffet!” Expectations were high when the Food & Wine Subcommittee invited trainees and friends for a tea and cake party on the 9th of April 2015 in the Jean Monnet cafeteria. Cake Stravaganza excelled the subcommittee’s wildest dreams with a total of 30 different cakes and pies and almost 40 participants. Even Danai showed up!
The concept was simple: All participants were requested to bring a cake or some other treat to the buffet table. The subcommittee catered for tea and coffee, and everyone was free to eat and drink to their hearts’ content. And eat we did! After welcoming words by Cake Mastermind Andrea, trainees and friends grabbed their forks to taste the delicacies, accompanied by the sound of champagne corks flying to the roof.
Several trainees had gone all out to bake something very special, sacrificing their night’s sleep to complete their cakes and pies. We rejoiced in national delicacies such as Italian tiramisu, Maltese figolla and Polish jabłecznik, as well as sunburst lemon bars, carrot cake, cheesecake with mascarpone, butter cake with almonds, chocolate cakes, strawberry cakes, James’s mystery cake, raspberry pie, apple pies, and chocolate-nutella-coconut-banana muffins. And many, many more.
The cakes were complemented by an open bar of refreshments: sparkling wines, soft drinks, ice teas, and fruit juices. Many a hungry trainee went on a mission to taste every cake there was on the table, but no one is known to have succeeded. One thing is for sure: no one went home hungry. Many got a doggy bag for the weekend.
Cake Stravaganza lived up to its name: an extravagant plethora of cake. The Food & Wine Subcommittee is already planning its next event and we hope to meet the same enthusiasm in the upcoming Eurodinner. Stay tuned!
Eat long and prosper,
